The UAE Green Residence Visa is a 5-year, self-sponsored residence visa that breaks the old rule of needing an employer to live and work in the UAE. It’s built for the modern workforce: skilled employees on the move, independent professionals, freelancers and investors. If you’ve been waiting for a UAE residency that won’t collapse the moment you change jobs, this is it.

What the Green Visa is — in plain English

Until recently, the standard route to UAE residency was an employer sponsoring you on a 2 or 3-year work visa. Lose the job, lose the visa. The Green Visa changes that: you sponsor yourself, the residence runs for 5 years, and you decide where and how you work within the UAE.

It also unlocks family sponsorship: you can bring your spouse, your children up to 25 years of age, and (subject to thresholds) your parents. For Indian families used to dependent visas being limited or reset every time the breadwinner changes jobs, this is a meaningful upgrade.

The three eligibility tracks

Pick the one that matches your situation. You only need to qualify under one.

Track 1 — Skilled employee

For people in formal employment in the UAE who want to graduate from a 2-year work visa to 5-year self-sponsored residence.

  • Valid UAE employment contract.
  • Occupation classified at MoHRE skill level 1, 2 or 3.
  • Minimum monthly basic salary of AED 15,000.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher (attested).

Track 2 — Freelancer / self-employed

For independent professionals: consultants, designers, writers, developers, photographers, coaches and similar.

  • A freelance permit issued by MoHRE or a relevant UAE free zone (e.g. Dubai Media City, twofour54, Ras Al Khaimah free zone).
  • Bachelor’s degree or specialised diploma in your area of work.
  • Proof of average annual income of AED 360,000+ over the past two years or financial solvency for the duration of the visa.
Don’t have a freelance permit yet? We can introduce you to a free zone partner who issues the permit and bundles it with the Green Visa application, so the whole stack is filed together.

Track 3 — Investor / partner

For business owners and partners with a commercial presence in the UAE.

  • Valid UAE commercial license (mainland or free zone).
  • Board/partner approval as relevant.
  • Proof of investment matching the qualifying threshold defined by the issuing emirate.

Cost

Total all-in cost for a Green Visa typically falls in the AED 2,500–3,500 range. That covers the visa application fee, the medical fitness test, the Emirates ID (10-year ID is now standard with this visa) and standard administrative fees. Costs can vary slightly by emirate and free zone. We confirm an exact quote after your eligibility is verified.

Documents required

  • Passport copy, valid 6+ months.
  • Recent passport-size photograph, white background.
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate, attested (MEA + UAE Embassy in India for Indian degrees).
  • Skilled employee track: employment contract, salary certificate, MoHRE occupation classification proof.
  • Freelancer track: freelance permit, two-year income proof (bank statements + invoices), portfolio.
  • Investor track: commercial license, share certificate, MoA / partnership agreement, financial statements.
  • Medical fitness test (done in the UAE after entry).
  • Emirates ID biometrics (done at an EID typing centre in the UAE).

How we file it for you

  1. Eligibility call. Send your CV, degree, and proof of income or employment. We confirm which of the three tracks fits, and what’s missing.
  2. Document attestation. If your degree isn’t already attested for the UAE, we coordinate the MEA + UAE Embassy steps.
  3. File the entry permit. We submit through the appropriate channel (ICA or GDRFA).
  4. Enter the UAE on the entry permit, complete the medical fitness test and EID typing. We coordinate the appointments.
  5. Visa stamp + Emirates ID issued. End-to-end timeline: 2–4 weeks.

Sponsoring your family on a Green Visa

Once your Green Visa is issued you can sponsor:

  • Spouse — with attested marriage certificate, sponsor income above the standard threshold and a tenancy contract showing adequate accommodation.
  • Sons up to 25 — provided they are studying. Beyond 25 a separate visa is required.
  • Daughters until marriage.
  • Parents — subject to the standard parent-sponsorship salary threshold (currently AED 20,000+ per month, or AED 19,000 + accommodation). Both parents must usually be sponsored together.

Green Visa vs. Golden Visa — which one

The Golden Visa is a stronger document — 10 years vs 5, with an additional level of prestige and easier renewal. But it’s reserved for distinguished talent: high-tier investors, exceptional researchers, top students, top-paid executives and a small set of named tracks. For most professionals and freelancers, the Green Visa is the realistic choice. We have a dedicated guide to the UAE Golden Visa if you want to compare.

FAQ

Green Visa — common questions

Three tracks: skilled employees (MoHRE skill level 1–3, AED 15,000+ monthly salary), freelancers (freelance permit + degree + AED 360,000+ annual income for the past 2 years) and investors (commercial license matching the threshold).

5 years, renewable. Unlike the standard work visa it’s not tied to your employer.
